SENIORS ROOM 2 TTH PM
JANUARY REFLECTIONS MWF Seniors Room 2
Happy 2012! We began January with a warm welcome back and a review of the alphabet and the number concept of one-to-one correspondence. The boys and girls used alphabet blocks to print letters. Some children printed the whole alphabet, some asked how to spell simple words and searched for the letters to print the word and others had fun just printing while learning to recognize and identify many of the letters.
At music time, we marched around the alphabet, stopping when the music stopped and picking up letters to identify them. Show n Tell was also a great way to review the letters and their corresponding sounds for the letters that we had worked on in our ABC book before Christmas break.
On PJ Day, we relaxed in our warm pajamas, enjoyed hot cocoa and reviewed the number concept of counting out 10 stickers to represent 10 marshmallows in a cup of hot cocoa.
Still waiting for snow, the boys and girls painted snow people at the easels, using the size concept of small, medium and large. They painted three little circles to represent a snowman...adding facial features, hats, arms etc. Our second snowman project focused on many different skills. They included following directions in a sequential order using fine motor skills to cut circles and glue pieces together to construct a snowman. The teachers will share your childs project with you at Parent - Teacher conferences in February.
Vision and Hearing testing took place in our room - after the children did a great job with their testing, they visited the other 2 rooms to explore the other learning materials and centers in the building. While back on our room, we played phone number Bingo. As the teacher called out the numbers 0 - 9, the children had to find these numbers on their phone number card. We are teaching them the phone number you chose (home or cell) plus the number 1 plus area code. Lots of numbers to learn!
Back to snow! The children used their fine motor skills to cut out fine pictures of an out-of-order 5 part sequential story of a child building a snowman. After cutting and arranging the pictures in the correct sequence, the children glued the pictures from left to right to tell a story with a beginning - middle and end. Following a lesson about winter playtime using our Weekly Reader, we all had fun painting a winter tree. Our arms were painted to represent the trunk of the tree and hands and fingers were painted to make the branches.
In remembrance of Martin Luther King, we used our Weekly Reader to discuss how to be kind and helpful to others.
To further improve our proper scissor grips and control the boys and girls cut out different size snowflakes and arrange them in proper order from large to small. Cutting designs on a folded doilies and opening it up to see a unique snowflake shape was an activity that produced surprised results.
Wacky Wednesday was enjoyed by all dressed up in silly outfits and making a creative loop art project. We also read the book Wacky Wednesday by Dr. Suess.
During January, we worked on the letters Jj, Kk, Ll and Mm in our Alphabet Book. Pounding little golf tees in a Styrofoam board with play hammers was a busy fine motor activity that was set up. We made clean mud in our manipulative table. To make it, the children ripped apart toilet paper, we then added shaved Ivory soap, Borax and water. We mixed it all together& just like playing with mud but much cleaner.
Everyone took turns on our child-sized exercise equipment. We had the tread mill, stationary bike and bench press in our room for two weeks. Rooms 1 & 3 then got their turns. However, we had an added surprise - a new trampoline. Thank you all!! The mini trampoline was purchased with Fund Raiser money. The children love it!! And, its great on those days when it's to cold to go outside!!
It was a great start for a new year!!
