JANUARY REFLECTIONS
SUPER 5 SENIORS
January came with a bang as we jumped right back into the swing of things after Christmas break! We spent a lot of time reviewing the first half of the alphabet by discussing them in show and tell and printing with ABC blocks! Our class loved spelling their own names with the blocks and also the names of their family members! They also really enjoyed another alphabet activity in Room 1 called the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Tree. In this project, the children created a coconut tree by tearing brown and green construction paper and writing as many letters in the alphabet as they could! This is a favorite story in our classroom and the children really liked creating it themselves! We also started working on new letters of the alphabet by practicing them in our ABC Books. We worked on the upper and lowercase of J, K, L and M. The children are doing an outstanding job on their ABC Books and ask daily when they can take them home to show you!
Since January brought chilly temperatures and snow, we thought a pajama day with hot cocoa was a necessity! We tasted hot chocolate and lemonade in the Super 5 room and wrote down how they were similar and different. We also counted syllables with marshmallows and had a terrific time! We worked on winter trees and painted snow, and we even created our own snowmen with paint dobbers counting from 1 all the way to 10! And how can we forget about all of the journaling we did in Room 1?? Our class wrote about their very favorite thing to do in the snow and also what they thought that snowmen did at night! This idea came from a story that we read in class called Snowmen At Night where the snowmen in the town all wake up at night and go ice skating and dancing! The children then came up with their own ideas and wrote about them in their journal!
We spent a couple of days studying penguins in the Super 5 classroom this month! We learned about the various types of penguins, how some are big and some are small, and where they live. One of our projects involved painting with ice, which was a really fun media to try, and we also created a class book called "My Penguin Can..." Each child in the class worked on one page of the book and drew a picture of what their penguin could do. We then took a dictation and wrote what they said at the bottom of their page! You'll definitely have to check out this book the next time you're in the classroom! We also started playing telephone number bingo in the classroom to work on learning our phone numbers! Each child had a large piece of paper with their phone number written out on it. They received poker chips and every time the teacher called out a number that was found in their telephone number, they covered it up! This was such a fun way to work on numeral recognition along with the important task of learning their phone number!
Songs such as "Icy Toes" and "Look at the Snow" were two favorites in the classroom this month along with "Tooty Ta" and "The Bear Hunt"! The children are also still building Chicago daily, using the blocks for buildings and the cars for traffic! They continually ask the teachers to take pictures of their work and to "pleeeeease email them to their moms and dads!" This month has definitely been both a fun and productive one! |
